Nowadays, most dentists consider teeth whitening<\/strong> as a cosmetic treatment for their patients. The American Dental Association (ADA)<\/strong> has issued the following conclusion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“At-home whitening treatments, when prescribed by a dentist, produced by a reputable brand, and used under a dentist’s supervision for a relatively short period, are safe and considered the most effective method for teeth whitening. Patients are advised to use whitening products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance<\/strong>.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mild temperature sensitivity<\/strong> (sensitivity to cold) is a common side effect of most in-office and dentist-prescribed at-home whitening treatments. However, related clinical studies have not shown any long-term irreversible effects<\/strong> on oral tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comprehensive dental research indicates that teeth whitening using 10% carbamide peroxide does not cause any irreversible side effects<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, dentistry has introduced carbamide peroxide as a preventive measure against periodontal disease and cavities<\/strong> in patients who are unable to maintain regular oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing. For such patients, dentists create custom-fitted rubber trays<\/strong> for their teeth and gums. The tray\u2019s tooth-shaped indentations are filled with 10% carbamide peroxide<\/strong>, which the patient wears for two hours a day<\/strong> or overnight<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When carbamide peroxide comes into contact with plaque, it releases 3.5% hydrogen peroxide and 6.5% urea<\/strong>. Urea then breaks down into ammonia and carbon dioxide<\/strong> due to bacterial activity. Hydrogen peroxide eliminates harmful bacteria in the mouth<\/strong>, while ammonia increases the plaque\u2019s pH levels<\/strong>, neutralizing acids that cause cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
