When the dental pulp is damaged (due to significant cavities, tooth trauma, or bacteria infiltrating from the gum system), it can lead to pain, swelling, or infection. This is because teeth that have had their pulp removed often lose a significant amount of structure; the remaining tooth tissue after a root canal becomes brittle and susceptible to fracture.
